Black Box: La Llamada de los dioses - Session 33

As always remember you may find spoilers, so if you are playing the campaign or think about playing it you probably do not want to read more beyond this point (or perhaps you want, who knows).

To write the chronicle of this session I was helped by Amaia, who acted as assistant chronicler during its development.

After defeating the kobold queen in the previous session the group went ahead exploring the nest caves and eventually found another room full of kobolds, with an orc training them for war. the ensuing combat didn't take much effort gor players characters because Belacqua, the half-elf magician, used her Sleep spell to neutralize a great number of these humanoid lizards and Hassba, the assassin, managed to quickly finish the orc trainer and the other few kobolds which hadn't fallen in Morpheus' arms fled.

After taking the creature's treasure 💰 (you know, this is experience helping them to level up) they started to follow those who had fled and got them inside a cave with a crowd of their kind. Combat seemed dangerous given the great number of enemies, but it was not so much because many of them fell fulminated (well!, this had happened other times 😉) and the rest didn't had any chance in the face of player characters' attack.

Satisfied by how the exploration was developing (it wasn't so difficult really, after all these are kobolds with not many chances to defeat the group) they went forward to investigate another cavern and... oh surprise: Hassba activated an alarm (a small bell 🔔 attached to a cable) which quickly alerted the kobold contingent, which fell over them ready to avenge their fallen comrades, something they didn't achieved thanks to Belacqua's Sleep spell, Flynn's clerical Light spell (which he used to blind some of the creatures) and the attacks of the othe members of the group (although Hassba wasn't specially smart because he hacked himself after rolling a fumble in the attack roll).

After the corresponding plunder of the kobold treasure (more experience rise 💰) they went onward and explored another adjacent cave where they bumped face to face with a more dangerous monster than kobolds they had faced before, because there was a party of these creatures using a zorn (a monster with 3 arms and a huge mouth that feeds on rocks) to enlarge tke cave system of their nest. In the confrontation that followed Belacqua had to press-up with her Flaming Sphere 🔥 to contain the xorn, as it got free from its shackles and attacked indiscriminately anyone who came within reach, while Flynn used his Light spell to blind the kobolds and then Sing to Valion's Glory and support his peers, which allowed Hassba to defeat the xorn.

Havving finished with the menace of the rock-eater and its kobold jailers the group decided to relieve them from their treasure💰 (more experience!) and stop to take a rest, which led them to deal with a topic they had been talking about since they discovered the magic card decks in session #32: Did they dare to tempt fate and draw a card to see what would happen?

After talking about it for a while Alex (the player acting as Flynn) took a bet and rolled 1d6, if the roll was even he will dare to draw one of the cards... And so it was, so before trying he left aside his weapons and Mary Poppins' bag 👜 to prepare for such a feat... so his character can Levitate now! (yes, like in the ame name spell). Cheerful by the outcome Flynn draw a second card, and his Intellect increased in 1 point! (so his magic point pool for spells also increased).

Seeing the advantages Alex had obtained for his character Ero (the player acting as Hassba) and Amaia (the player acting as Belacqua) also decided to try it drawing a pair of cards each one and obtained the following results:
  • Hassba ended losing 1 Dexterity point and gaining 1 Intellect point
  • Belacqua changed sex becoming a male character and... gained 1 character level! 👏🎉 (going from level 7 to 8, so among other things it means that obtains new spells, so from now the character also can cast Spider's Web and Ice Storm)

After this little diversion with such unexpected results for players the group went forward and began to take advantage of the changes they had experienced, which manifested in the chance Belacqua had to use her renovated male aspect to convince some kobolds by means of her Penumbra priest tunic (acquired in previous sessions) and timely and successful Diplomacy rolls she was carrying out an inspection and coerce them to give her all their treasure (well, for once they achieved experience without needing to use violence). Moreover she used her new Ice Storm spell to freeze some ugly-looking fungi in a near cave and avoid that these could affect the group.

Reading the map of the underground complex they had obtained in previous sessions the group saw only two unexplored caverns remaining in the level, so they set out to delve into them and see what contained before heading to the lower level.

In the first one they faced a draco which attacked the group, It could have caused great damage (Hassba rolling another fumble and hitting Alanna also did not help too much), luckily Belacqua used her Magic Missile during combat and could finish the creature.

In teh second one they found a beautifully decorated throne with an inscription devoted to Persigod II The Misty One... Suspecting it could be a trap Flynn began to think about his time while studying in the monastery and remembered that this said Persigod II wasn't a monarch, really being a magician (ie, he acomplished in a satisfactory manner his History roll). they also discovered something at the cavern ceiling, right over the the throne, there was a chimney bored in the ceilien with some kind of object inside...

Taking advantage of his new ability to Levitate Flyyn grabed Hassba and went up to the chimney to discover thet the objects inside it were metal stakes, without doubt part of some kind of trap (their assumption was these were prepared to fall over anyone sitting in the throne), so Hassba tried to find and deactivate the trap's mechanism, although he wasn't successful because he didn't found any spring.

Decided to unravel the trap's workings they prepared for any contingency, Belacqua casted Spider's Web to block the metal stakes and Flynn, with a rope tied around the waist and held by Alanna and Hassba, dropped a mail coat he had Mary Poppins' bag 👜, moment in which it immediately was propelled upwards to embedded in the chimney (if it was a player character surely he would have been seriously injured or he would have died... 💀)

Having finished exploring this level the group prepared to descend to the lower level.
