Black Box: La Llamada de los dioses - Session 16

As always remember you may find spoilers, so if you are playing the campaign or think about playing it you probably do not want to read more beyond this point (or perhaps you want, who knows).

As I had explained before players are actively cooperating in the creation of these campaign reports, this time the chronicler assistant had been Martí, a new player who already began playing as a replacement player with Aradum Stormpike the Dwarf and now joining us with his own character, the paladin Khar Ragnaron, coming from the kingdom of Dormunder.

By the way, this will be the last session report for a time because part of the group is going on holydays or is busy with other matters, we will resume La Llamada de los dioses in September.


As I have explained at the beginning of this session report a new character joins the hardened adventurers group starring this saga and and does it in a somewhat special way, because he appears in the underground complex acting as the home of the evil Penumbra clerics emerging from a swirl of blue lights and smoke after going through a mysterious light at Dormunder while stalking some roughnecks who tried to assault (and perhaps defile) some pretty girls.

Soon Khar saw he wasn't in the forest he asked himself what the hell happened, but he didn't had more time to keep lost in his thoughts because the quick appearance of a group of 10 not very friendly orcish warriors forced him to escape through the tunnels.

And what was happening with the other characters? let`s remember that in the previous session they had an encounter with other orcs and a cockatrice hidden among some poultry used for food, this leading to a chase with the animal paralyzing some orcs and tenaciously pursuing the characters, with Khar appearing and running face to face with the ugly bird after turning the corner so you can imagine the scene: the original characters surviving the previous sessions are preparing an ambush for the cockatrice in the cave with the staircase leading to the upper level of the underground complex (which is from they had gone down previously) when they see an unknown individual with plate armor surprising the animal for a moment which, after checking with a pair of pecks the armor can be pierced, charges again while the furious orcs chasing Khar arrive.

So we have the fight of the first characters with the cockatrice, with Meler trying to blind it unsuccessfully using the dryad's bright wand and Grognak falling over the bird with a blanket to cover it and avoid to get pecked (with the chance of getting paralyzed) and thus get ending it with swords thrusts right and left.


But problems hadn't ended of course, because the had to face the orcs horde which appeared with the newcomer, something they achieved relatively easily with two survivors fleeing terrified (they failed their moral throws), although they had the misfortune of finding another orcish troop with a Penumbra cleric forcing them to attack the intruders again.


Khar joined the characters and all of them prepared to resist the enemy push stationed at the stone steps. Part of these preparations consisted in trying to use a successful trick used before: a rope tensioned at the last moment to bring down the assailants or stop them, but this just didn't entirely work because a significant part of the orcs avoided the trap thanks to their agility, so the following combat was dramatic and intense, although they managed to to survive it.

After the fray the characters seached the orcs' corpses and heal the suffered injuries and, after due introductions, they went to examine the mysterious vortex from which Khar appeared.

After watching it for a few minutes the strange bluish light and misty swirls (and quickly understanding that it can be a way to reach other places) they decided to begin some tests for using it, but of course they didn't dare to expose themselves to the vortex action, so they decide to use some things more handy, like one of the orcs leaders' head they beat before, so they tied a line to the head to recover it and threw it to the mysterious lights to see what happened, but soon they realized that the force of the vortex dragging objects is really great, so they couldn't retain the head too much time before it was sucked out and dissapeared without any trace...

Seeing the outcome of their action (and without knowing where the head had gone) the characters agreed to leave for later the vortex study and they decided to further investigate the caves, taking special attention in searching the cave the orcs stalking Khar came from, so they discovered a hidden little treasure and an empty orc stronghold in which the group decided to remain to recover themselves, a time Grognak used to patch up his leather armor and using his handicraft knowledge add some studs to it while his partners took guard duty shifts disguised with the gear of the former occupants of the stronghold, allowing them to get unnoticed by orc and ogre patrols.

Having a base allowing them to continue exploring they decided to see what was in the nearest caves, so they discovered a lair of four necrophages which were easily got rid of (you know, the advantage of having a paladin in the group), searched the corpses of the victims of these filthy creatures and discovered among other things a mysterious bough...

Continuing with the exploration they faced again an orcish party led by one of the Penumbra clerics, after killing the cleric and two orcs all other fleed, although it was obvious that, after hearing some barking in the distance, problems problems were far from being over...
