Black Box: La Llamada de los dioses - Session 20

As always remember you may find spoilers, so if you are playing the campaign or think about playing it you probably do not want to read more beyond this point (or perhaps you want, who knows).

After these weeks with the blog unatended I'm back with all of you to continue narrating the adventures (and misadventures) of my players in their campaign to frustrate the plans of the evil clerics of Penumbra and carry out the mission which had been entrusted to them by the sea god Eru, which is none other than to recover his trident, leading them to discover the unknown island where they are and to venture into the underground hiding place under its volcano...

If you remember the far previous episode Meler the mystic (Ero's character) had experimented a somewhat radical transformation, because he was carrying with him the lycanthropy curse after being bitten by a werewolf, so he was in danger of having his teeth and body hair grow back in an uncontrolled way and express again a certain taste for biting his fellow men.

If Ero's character class had been another one at the end of the previous session we would be already thinking about his new character, but being a mystic (and being able of knowing himself and his being exhaustively) I gave him the chance of trying to contain himself and prevent him from falling again in such a dangerous condition (that is if he pass the corresponding saving throws he manages to mantain his composture without happening anything harmful to him and his companions 😅...).

Just in case such a deep determination failed he also decided to take as a precaution to wrap himself in a rope and create something of a restrictive trap able to contain himself if beginning to transform, and if this also failed he had as a last option to punch himself (of course my players never cease to amaze me 😅...).

Anyway, when all these preaprations got finished the group continued to explore the part of the complex in which they were, taking them a few moments of wandering for some caves until reaching a bridge made with two logs from which was possible to see a somewhat deep chasm, beyond the bridge there was the entrance to another cave from which they could hear the sound of someone carving wood.

Theia the assassin decided to take the chance of crossing the bridge (she achieved it without falling or activating the trap). When she went inside the cave saw several wooden figures representing armed warriors and an artisan working in front a table engaged in creating another carving. Facing such a tempting target she decided to approach from behind and deal him a fatal stab, which she managed to do even failing her stealth roll so the magician turned to see the face of the attacker.

And here you may think the characters would register the cave to see what profit they could get out of it (that is, they would loot), but not all was that easy as they hoped because the warrior figures (wooden golems after all) came to life and advanced menacingly against the group, so they decided to immediatly retreat and resort to a tactic previously used which is no other than the fire, so they used the oil flasks as molotov coctels and threw them toward their enemies, which obviously began to burn uncontrolled🔥 destroying all the cave's contents.

But all this didn't end here, because some of the warrior golems continue to advance and were about to leave the cave engulfed in flames so Meler and Theia were forced to retreat before this new threat, furthermore the roar of the fire had caught the attention of orcs and goblins coming ready to battle who were to be stopped by Luna and flynn and the old mercenary prisoners going with them.

And it was at this time that everything became even more complicated (sound of rolling dice 🎲...) because Meler saving throws to avoid becoming hairy again and all the other precautions failed 🐺 and the character could see how the flickering image of the moon was appearing through the flames while quickly transforming.


Before the transformation was over Theia decided to take the chance and jumped from the bridge to the chasm wall to climb it and flee from the claws and jaws of a completely deranged and unwilling to address reasons Meler, however the mystic-werewolf jumped after her and attacked bitting her, so shortly afterwards she lost her balance and fell into the void, so the campaign has claimed the life of another character and it would be time for preparing a new one for Laura.

The adventures of the rest of the characters of the group were not over, because Luna and Flynn soon were chased by the deranged Meler and had to face him until rending him unconscious (i.e. with 0 hit points) and decided to abandon him at a crossroads because thye were already hearing the orcs' thundering voices and human voices yelling orders.

As for Meler's fate as a character we all came to the conclusion that it was basically unplayable in its current state, so we decided to "retire him" and that Ero will create a new character.
