Review of Sturm und Drang (Part 1)

In today's post I begin a small series in which I will review Sturm und Drang, the Second World War supplement of the Walküre game line, created by the Aventureros Errantes de la Marca del Este and Demonio Sonriente, as well as the adventures that could be obtained during the patronage, which ended successfully in November 2018, and some advide to use it with other role-playing games.

What is Walküre?

Before beginning to coment the contents of Sturm und Drang it will be useful to remind what is Walküre: This game presents an uchronia in which the historical facts didn't develop as in our world, because Nazi Germany and Axis powers weren't defeated during Second World War, with the conflict encysted in a kind of cold war from 1944 to 2075, for the time being, with a really accelerated technological development because at the end of the 21st century part of the solar system is already colonized and all types of technical developments typical of a cyberpunk setting, like implants that increase human capabilities and which will lead to a transhumanist panorama, had appeared.

In fact this isn't the first time I talk about Walküre, because in previous blog posts I showed reviews of the basic manual and of the supplements Mondblindheit and Kreuzfeuer.

Regarding the game system Walküre uses CdB Engine, created by Pablo Jaime Conill Querol, also known as Zonk PJ (Web | Patreon | Twitter | Lulu | DriveThruRPG), which is an evolution of one of his previous works: the ruleset Cacería de Bichos, which in turn is based in the FUDGE (Freeform Universal Do-it-yourself Gaming Engine) ruleset by Steffan O'Sullivan.

Sturm und Drang

The book of Sturm und Drang, which Aventureros Errantes de la Marca del Este had already released as a free download as can be seen in the tweet inserted at the beginning of this section, is basically divided in three parts: The historical chronology of the Second World War in the Walkure setting, a wide range of vehicles and weaponry of the era and an annex with character templates.

The historical chronology includes a great number of events ocurring between 1933 and 1944 adapted to the uchronia of the game's background, like the occupation of Gibraltar by Germans during the Operation Félix (which in Walküre was successfully carried out), also a set of historical events that actually occurred and which aren't too well known to the general public (they get used to mentioning in specialized literature) are explained, like the acting of German spy networks in Spain, and also the internal structure of organizations like the Gestapo or the RSHA.

As for the weaponry and vehicles you will find one of the most extensive and complete lists appearing in a role-playing supplement, because the book offers the history and game statistics for CdB Engine along the corresponding photograph or illustration for ground vehicles (tanks, lorries...), aerial ships (fighters, bombers...), war vessels and weaponry (from infantry weapons to heavy weapons and those mounted in vehicles) used by the United States, France, Italy, Japan, United Kingdom, Third Reich and the Soviet Union.

To end, the character templates offers a list of character types (soldiers and members of resistance groups) created starting with 100 Development Points which are already prepared to be immediately used in the game.

And here ends the first part, in the next post I will talk about Walküre pocket book and the adventures unlocked in the patronage.
