Black Box: La Llamada de los dioses – Session 6

With this post I'm going on with the campaign log of La Llamada de los dioses I'm refereeing for my regular game group at La Cofradía del rol, for previous campaign sessions you may read these links: #1 #2 #3 #4 #5

As always remember you may find spoilers, so if you are playing the campaign or think about playing it you probably do not want to read more beyond this point (or perhaps you want, who knows).

As I explained in the summary of the previous session, the characters that had not yet risen to the third level had finally accumulated enough experience to do it, so the first thing we did before starting was to make adjustments in Hit Points (HP) and skills according to each class.

Once this is done players decided to further explore the island and looked to an area that had not yet been explored in depth: the mountain range located in the southwest corner (place where certainly they had sighted a patrol earlier in their second lap around the island with the ship), so no sooner said than done they re-board the Sombra Rauda (yes, for the third time ... ) and headed to the area.

After dropping anchor and getting close to the shore with the boat they decided to undertake the arduous climb through the mountains, which got good climbing rolls (and the odd scare). At the top of the mountain located a narrow path that only allowed them to pass in a row, so it was advisable to be careful if they did not want falling headlong down the mountain.

As they began to explore the path they were attacked by a swarm of stirges, they got rid of it with relative ease (thinking of lighting a fire to make smoke and try to drive them away was a great idea that helped them a lot). But their problems did not end here, as following the trail they sighted a patrol of orcs far away, so they set ambush, which resulted in a scene from a movie of Asterix and Obelix as you can see in the following video:

After this encounter they went down from the mountains and returned to the boat to sail back to the town of lizard men where they plotted their next plan of action: head to the volcano and enter the refuge of the clergy of Penumbra, something that Heldenhammer and Kai plan to carry out disguised with cleric robes prepared for the occasion, accompanied by Ak'tuk and a group of 10 warriors with the rest of the group following them at close range, the son of the leader with a prepared story to show complaints about the treatment of children of the village.

They get going guided by Ak'tuk and after climbing the bare slopes of the volcano (and perceive the great unease and unrest around them), finally reached a plateau leading to a hillside where a large door crowned by two facing dragons could be seen. In front of the door they were able to see a cleric talking to some orcish guards while a patrol of the green beings get away from the door and began their guard tour, characters decided to let them pass to avoid greater evils.

At the door Ak'tuk and costumed characters began to talk to the cleric at the entrance, but seeing that their ploy could not work because of the arrogant attitude of the cleric Heldenhammer decided it would be better to attack from behind and so start the combat, he slowly got to his back ready to act ...

And this is when events are triggered rapidly as clerics of Penumbra, very suspicious, had decided to increase their security measures due to the strange events that were happening on the island (disappearance of a patrol, appearance of a ship in the coast of the island which is sighted several times...), resulting in the appearance of a dark elf, leaving his invisibility spell and attacking Heldenhammer (and automatically gaining the initiative).

And things are further complicated because in the elf attack I roll a critical hit, so I do double damage to Heldenhammer's character and he passes away...

It is at this time when the rest of the characters jumped into the combat and Luna tries to do the same resuscitation maneuver she made in past sessions with Morkhan, but in this case the roll is not effective so Heldenhammer is definitely dead (and the other characters have seen she has tried to do it with a mysterious artifact taken from his backpack, which obviously makes her quite suspectful).

But this is no time to dwell on such details as the fighting taking place around the characters requires full attention: the orc guards are facing the lizard men, the cleric before fleeing to warn more guards has casted a Sleep spell towards Kai and the dark elf has casted Hold person to Luna (and both have failed their saving throws...).

The fight seemed to last forever, but the time came in which the characters were able to overpower their enemies and partly due to the efforts of Luna, though he was under the spell Hold Person, his mind could still think and work, so with much effort (visible by drops of sweat running over her face and her frown) she was able to control the dark elf ...

After the fight the lizard men withdrew taking Ak'tuk, who had been wounded during the fighting, and spell effects vanished ...

And thus ended the session, with characters willing to delve into what awaits beyond the doors (though that will be in September, after the summer holidays).

What will happen in the next session?

As is customary to say:

To be continued...
