Black Box: La Llamada de los dioses - Session 37

As always remember you may find spoilers, so if you are playing the campaign or think about playing it you probably do not want to read more beyond this point (or perhaps you want, who knows).

To write the chronicle of this session I was helped by Amaia, who acted as assistant chronicler during its development.

At the end of the previous session the characters kept exploring the cavern complex where the evil Penumbra clerics were hiding, eager to carry out the plans of the dark god if nobody stops them.

Hassba the assassin, who had decided to act as the group explorer, soon discovered a cavern where a group of humanoid creatures had succumbed to the effects of an attack of mysterious nature, as they were petrified... And to get the characters more nervous they heared from inside a nearby cave the noise of the footsteps of a surely big quadrupedal beast, perhaps of of draconic nature as Luna the half-elf discovered after succesfully tracking the zone...

Flynn the cleric didn't doubt to cast Light against the creature sheltered in the cave hoping to blind it and so attack with advantage, but he wasn't successful (the creature achievd to roll its saving throw) so he decided to Bless the group at the same time they discovered they were facing a dracolisk trying to petrify them (and didn't achieve it because the characters also also got their saving throws).

Fighting the dracolisk without looking directly (to avoid being petrified) the group successfully atacked the monster many times and Luna finally killed it with an accurate arrow from her bow.

While the characters were catching their breath and healing the wounds suffered in the fight they dedicated themselves to study the beast's lair and discovered that the cavern's walls oozed acid (a fact without doubt due to the monster's nature), so Belacqua, the half-elf mage, collected enough of it to create a single use acid bomb (yes, it is already known that the imagination of players to make the most of a situation has no limits).

The group decided to keep on exploring the caverns, increasingly empty due to their success confronting the evil clerics and their henchmen, until reaching another of the grottos and hearing what seemed to be a gastronomic discussion, because one voice shouted "raw!" and another one answered "roasted!". When approaching it cautiously they saw as the two heads of a giant (without doubt an ettin) arguing about the best way to cook the tied human lying at their feet.

It wasn't in the characters' minds to allow the ettin getting away with it of course, so they inmediately got embroiled in a combat initiated by Flynn casting a Light spell against the head shouting "raw!" and achieved to blind it, which helped his comrades in arms to swiftly kill the creature.

After the combat, and after carry off with the ettin's treasure, the characters focused their attention in the human who had been about to end up in the monster's stomach and after identifying him as a bucaneer due to the clothes he wore (and Alanna neither Detected Evil in the highest degree in him), he admitted he worked as a personal assassin for Rugious Elmegar, who in time actively collaborated with clerics of Penumbra until he was betrayed by them and all his men were butchered. Rhael, as this was the bucaneer's name, told the group the horrors they would face if they decided to keep on with their underground journey and promised to help them if they released him, something they quickly accepted.

The group continued to explore the tunnels and finally reached another chamber, there they saw a hooded figure wrapped in a cape and turning their back on them while praying to what seemed to be a sepulchre. Hassba decided it was time to show he was a worthy assassin, so he silently approached from behind to deal a deadly blow that would knock him out (me and the other players looked at each other with the face of "he is not going to make it" 😔, because all remembered how in previous occasions the player had dramatically failed some important rolls)... Although against all odds he got it! 😮 He had managed to avoid a confrontation that could have been fatal to the group, because the downed enemy turned out to be a dangerous scorpion man!



After this display of skill (and me thinking that they were headed to a certainly dangerous situation, even a lethal one...) they dedicated themselves to study the room and Flynn concluded that they were in the tomb of an ancient monarch and that without any doubt the room was oozing evil, so he dediced it was necessary to carry out immediately a Expel Living Dead over the stone coffin before trying to open it (not in vain the player playing the character is an old-timer an knows of the many dangers which can appear in a gaming session).

After the cleric got to expel the living dead they would encounter after opening the coffin Hassba and Alanna lift the lid and discovered its dusty remains and the correspondent treasure as well as a magic mace wich surely will be useful.

Once they had thoroughly inspected the chamber the group continue exploring the tunnels reaching another chamber entrance, a chamber closed with a wodden door which Hassba set out to study to detect any traps that were in it, skillfully discovering an electrical ray trap which quickly avoided to go into the room and discover it to be a pantry, proceeding to loot keeping all the food in the Mary Poppins bag 👜 (as they called the magic bag where they keep everything they find).



The group kept moving until finding the hilt of a sword, submerged in what seemed to be an acid patch and a trail which Luna followed seeing it stretched along the tunnel reaching a cave inhabited by a kind of giant slimy armadillo who immediately attacked the group. The rust monster, since that it was, destroyed Lena and Belacqua armor before Alanna killed the beast.

After this encounter the group decided to keep on and end up facing a troop of gnolls which couldn't resist the combined attack of the characters, because Flynn Blessed the group, Belacqua casted Ice Storm and Hassba rolled a critical hit in an attack (you already know: a natural 20 in 1 1D10 roll, so he automatically hits the enemy and do double damage).

After the mandatory loot of the gnoll corpses (to get treasure and armor to subtitute those that Lena and Belacqua lost with the encounter with the rust monster) the group decided to stay there to rest and cure the wounds suffered during combat, so they established guard duties... and didn't had to wait more to have visitors, because a patrol of 4 gnolls appeared and didn't doubt to attack but they hadn't any chance with the characters because Belacqua and Rhael swiftly killed 2 of them and the others quickly ran away.

After a deserved rest the characters followed the the trail of the gnolls that fled and they reached the vicinity of a large chamber where they found the corpses of the two beings and something that made them hide quickly, because at the end of the cave saw black doors that did not bode well, since in addition to the restlessness caused by their vision 😨 they also observed that they were protected by a guard of 5 dark elves.

Of course the characters didn't stay still and quickly cook up an attack plan to get rid of the guards: Hassba scaled the cave walls to attain an advantageous position, Flynn Levitated taking advantage of the fact that the cavern ceiling was high enough with Luna grabbing his feet and Belacqua hiding in shadows while Alanna and Rhael came forward for the dark elves to see them. The combat that followed was intense and wild, with Flynn Blessing the group and Belacqua casting a Spiderweb against the guards while the rest joined the attack and some of the dark elfs became Invisible, although after suffering a certainly strange headache (yes, again) they appeared again to be victims of Lena, Luna and Belacqua (who killed two of them with a Magic Missile) attacks while Flynn was Singing to Valion's glory.

Having eliminated the guards, the group approached the door to examine it carefully...
