Burial of Alexander Nevsky, by Henryk Siemiradzki (1843–1902) (Public domain) |
As always remember you may find spoilers, so if you are playing the campaign or think about playing it you probably do not want to read more beyond this point (or perhaps you want, who knows).
To write the chronicle of this session I was helped by Ero, who acted as assistant chronicler during its development.
After having experienced (for good and bad) what can involve to play with the magic fortune cards discovered in previous sessions the group was ready to proceed exploring the caverns in which they were, which led them to skirt the great lava lake through the tunnels that surrounded it.
Funeral procession of Sir Philip Sidney (1587), by Thomas Lant and Theodor de Bry (Public domain) |
The characters went into the tunnels until Alanna the paladin Detected Evil onece more and the group immediately heared the sound of a monotonous chant that was approaching, so they hurry up to prepare to face the enemy that sure was coming: Alanna put herself on guard and Flynn began to Levitate taking advantage his newly acquired faculty (and that the roof of the tunnel was high enough) while the others quickly disguised themselves with the tunics of the Penumbra clerics they got in previous sessions hoping to convince those approaching that they were of their own... something they failed.
In the fight that followed the group of characters faced a funeral procession formed by a Penumbra cleric (which until a few moments had been reciting the mournful chants) and 4 ogres carrying a coffin stone which certainly looked heavy. Flynn Blessed all and also got to blind the cleric with a Light spell, which allowed Belacqua to quickly finish him while the other characters easily brought down 3 ogres, the fourth getting to escape (Flynn shot him with his bow... but rolled a fumble that did not have a very unfortunate result, limited only to losing an arrow).
After allowing the ogre to flee the characters concentrated on studying the coffin, fearing they could face a danger of undead origin (previously they had faced zombies, skeletons, a vampire, so...), so they wanted to make sure and Alanna rolled for Arcane Knowledge without getting anything clear.
Hassba y Alanna lifted the coffin's lid by force of arms, observing carefully inside lest something happen and finally discovered a corpse of a high rank cleric resting in it (and no, it didn't raised and attacked them or anything similar). The corpse, in addition to the rich vestments with which it was shrouded, also wore a rich necklace which Belacqua ended up correctly identifying as a Wisdom medal (which give +2 to WIS and that the half-elf magician did not hesitate to claim).

Searching the corpses of the fallen enemy (more treasure 💰!) Belacqua discovered that the cleric was wearing a strange pendant on his habit: a two-headed lion that was clearly magical and very powerful (so she decided to pick it up carefully without his skin touching it, lest something happen...).
Hassba the assassin was worried (there's moments in which the character's level of paranoia visibly increases given the experiences they have lived), so he didn't hesitate to slit the throat of the corpse in the coffin (just in case) and convinced the others in the group to put it inside the bottomless bag (also known amicably as Mary Poppins bag 👜) with the intention of getting rid of it later.

The group went forward and reached an intersection in which they heard a rush of hurried footsteps and screaming voices approaching quickly, so they decided to ambush the approaching group. Shortly after appeared the ogre who had fled with a patrol of 7 orc archers coming from one of the stone bridges connecting the island at the lava lake with the rest of the underground complex.
In the ensuing battle Belacqua did not hesitate to use the Spiderweb spell to catch the ogre and 3 of the orcs while Flynn Blessed the group again to increase their chances of success in combat.
After managing to defeat them and plunder the corpses in search of treasure 💰 and useful equipment the group advanced to the lava lake while Alanna warned them that she clearly heard the noise of more footsteps approaching. Once at the lake Flynn decided to take out the corpse from Mary Poppins bag 👜 and throw it to the lava without too much contemplation (of course the corpse sank in the lake and while it was burned by the action of the high temperatures nothing happened at all 😜).

After this imitation of a viking funeral the group decided to continue exploring the galleries and reached a chamber in which met a large group of orcs led by one of the dark clerics. The characters decided to go on the attack without thinking too much or taking any caution (the fact that, as it had happened in previous sessions, the phenomenon by which part of his enemies were bleeding from nose and eyes took place again, surely encouraged them to jump into the fray) and managed to beat them without too much difficulty.
Searching the corpses Belacqua discovered that the cleric also carried an amulet in the shape of a two-headed lion and she picked it up cautiously just as he had done with the first one they had found. The characters began to inspect both not daring to touch them and Hassba found out with a critical Arcane Knowledge roll (20!) that the amulets were related somehow with the flow of time... But they could not keep thinking too much about it, since they soon heard the roars of wild beasts (which Hassba could identify as bears) that approached their position ...
What will happen in the next session?
As is customary to say:
