Black Box: La Llamada de los dioses - Session 29

As always remember you may find spoilers, so if you are playing the campaign or think about playing it you probably do not want to read more beyond this point (or perhaps you want, who knows).

To write the chronicle of this session I was helped by Amaia, who acted as assistant chronicler during its development.

Right at the end of the previous session the group had achieved to beat down the giant who jumped the chasm dividing in two the cave where they were, after registering the corpse (and get his 💰 treasure to gain more experience points) they were interested in the chasm and looking at the bottom of it they noticed something that caught their attention, because seemingly suspended in the air they could see armor, swords and coins glowing in darkness...

Intrigued by this strange phenomenon they decided to investigate it more carefully, to do so tied a stone to a rope and brought it down slowly up to the level of objects suspended in the air... Surprisingly the stone didn't went down and seemed to be stucked and was difficult to rise it up 😏.

The group left the resolution of the mistery for later and prepared themselves to cross the chasm to investigate the cavern where the giant appeared, to do it it was necessary to jump over the abyss using the rope hanging from the ceiling and the couple of volunteers, Flynn and Luna, decided to tie themselves to a safety rope as a security measure (in case of failing the jump they relied in their companions to pull them before touching whatever was down there).

Luna took some steps back to make a run... and she, as well as Flynn later, achieved to jump. When entering the cave they saw that, as supposed, it was the lair of the giant and leaving aside a giant-sized bed (if you'll excuse the repetition) also found a chest, which meant they discovered the giant's treasure (💰 more experience points!) and a strange helm which decided to investigate when they would have jumped the gap again.

The first character to jump was Luna... baut the rope got cut and she fell to the abyss 😯 barely getting to grab a ledge. Her companions had to help her to climb, but this didn't end here, because Luna had discovered that the strange phenomenon really was a gelatinous cube deformed when got trapped in the chasm... and it was slowly moving up to reach and attack them!

Then Belacqua recalled gelatinous cubes were specially vulnerable to fire, so she didn't hesitate to use his Flaming Sphere spell 🔥 and Hassba threw an oil flask which immediately ignited (as you may see fire continues to be a constant in the group 😏), Flynn began to sing to Valion's Glory to increase the chances of successful attacks by his companions and together they managed to kill the monster.

After this encounter Flynn, helped by his companions, pushed the giant's bed to use it as a bridge for crossing the abyss and the group met again to move forward not without first studying the helm they had just obtained, lest it was cursed or had some other similar problem associated with it. Alanna stared at it trying to Detect Evil but it turned out that it was clean, so Belacqua used his knowledge of magic and supernatural to discover it to be indeed a Helm of Vision: a magical artifact allowing whoever was wearing it to see in darkness like an elf or a dwarf, something which could be very useful in given circumstances, so the group decided that Hassba had to wear it from that moment on.

The characters continued to explore the tunnels and finally reached another cave where a large group of orcs and an ogre where celebrating loudly the death of a group of humans (the decapitated men they found in the previous session perhaps?). Using the tunics of the clerics of Penumbra they had obtained time ago Hassba and Belacqua joined the party to be in the right positions to surprise and attack them, in fact Hassba put himself behind the ogre's back and prepared to use his skill to stab him in the back... failing the roll 😯, luckily Belacqua's Sleep spell was more successful, because she achieved to put most of the orcs in the arms of the god of sleep, with only two of them and the ogre remaining awake, which prepared to attack the intruders who came to interrupt the party.

The ensuing combat was rather messy and not all the characters got successful combat rolls, but they finally overcame the enemy and got a respectable booty, so besides the gold loot 💰 they possessed (more experience!) also obtained... a +1 sword!

After healing the combat injuries they continued forward towards another cave in which screams of rage and anger never ceased to be heard, looking inside they could see a stone pinacles circle with a fire in the middle and a Penumbra cleric, surely of high rank given the bloodied eye decorating his tunic, trying to contain the fury and worry of the ogre, kobolds, orcs and hobgoblins gathered there complaining about the presence of a group of paladins which had infiltrated the underground complex and were decimating their ranks, without seeming possible to resist their attacks (of course the characters had caused a great number of casualties among the Penumbra hosts and panic was beginning to spread within them).




The playing characters decided to set a trap for those gathered there, so Hassba, disguised with one of the cleric's tunics, would try to persuade them to go out telling their presence was needed to contain an attack by the paladins, when leaving the cave the rest of the group would set an ambush. An interesting approach which was successful, but not exactly by Hassba's performance (because he failed the Perform roll to convince them 😂), so the horde gathered there began to chase him through the tunnels commanded by the cleric who required his troops to immediately catch the intruder, so the group had the chance of attacking them from behind.

After emerging victorious from the battle they searched the corpses of their enemies (💰 more experience points by loot!) and Belacqua grabbed the tunic with the bllody eye, thinking it sure could be useful in the future.
