Black Box: La Llamada de los dioses - Session 36

As always remember you may find spoilers, so if you are playing the campaign or think about playing it you probably do not want to read more beyond this point (or perhaps you want, who knows).

To write the chronicle of this session I was helped by Ero, who acted as assistant chronicler during its development.

At the finish of the previous session charcters were in a rather dangerous situation, because just before finishing they heard some not reassuring roars, which Flynn identified as those of cave bears quickly approaching, and which soon discovered to be incited by a pretty large owlbear.

In the ensuing combat they managed to show off their skills, because Hassba achieved a critical hit attack against one of the bears (you know it: a natural 20 rolling a D20, which implies to strike the objective with double damage) and Belacqua didn't doubt to use her Ice Storm spell against the beasts while Flynn Blessed all of them, something that without doubt helped Alanna to finish the owlbear and two of the bears and Lena and Hassba the two other ones.

After this succesful combat the group decided to follow the bears' trail to their lair, which allowed them to find the treasure kept there and, more important, vials for Hear Serious Injuries and Heal Curse which may surely be useful later.

After this discovery the characters continued with their exploration and with the help of the map obtained in session #23 reached a door after which, as per map directions, there are two parallel tunnels leading to a circular floor chamber which seemed curious enough to investigate it more closely.

But the problem was to open that door since it didn't seem to have any lock, and Belacqua also detected a pair of things which worried the group: beyond the door a great magic was working its wonders and the door had some kind fo trap associated...

Luna studied the situation during a few moments and concluded that the door could be opened manipulating the 5 holes at the bottom of a gap (which undoubtedly belonged to the fingers of a human hand) of a plaque at the wall.

Hassba, being the assassin also could try to disable traps, tried to cancel the mechanism without success (you know he not always gets his rolls), so he resorted to another ruse and pull out from Mary Poppins' bag Wooster's arm, who had accompanied them in part of their tour of the catacombs of the evil Penumbra clerics (his arm was severed in session #30 and he was also petrified by a medusa gaze), to insert the barbarian's hand fingers so nothing would happen to his own ones...

But of course, not all would be so easy, because doing this he couldn't properly touch the opening mechanism and achieved nothing, so at the end he was forced to try with his own hand... and though he suffered cutting damage in fingers he was lucky enough not to loose it.

And what did find the group after opening the door? Well, both tunnels appearing on the map, but with inscriptions that certainly complicated things:

"Time goes fast"
"Time goes slow"


Which one of both tunnels should be the right one? (or the less dangerous for the group...). To find out they tried to detect some trace of footsteps suggesting which one of both tunnels was used by the inhabitants of the underground complex, but they failed, so they had to think abaout something else.

In that moment Belacqua remembered that Hassba managed to find out (in the previous session) that the double-headed lion medallions where somewhat related to the flow of time, so the characters prepared the following plan:

Flynn and Alanna got the medallions (one each) and the other characters got ready to go with them in a row and holding hands or touching the partner's shoulder in front of them (yes, like children in a school trip), with Flynn went Belacqua and Lena and with Alanna went Luna and Hassba and they entered one of the tunnels... (no, I'm not going to tell you which one 😜).



And what happened? Well, some little bit strange things, because for all people carrying the medallions time seemed to elapse very slowly... and also temporarily lost Constitution and Strength points, but much worse was for the others in the group as they lost those point permanently.

Seeing that going into the tunnel was potentially dangerous they decided to go back and faced up two Penumbra clerics which just entered the chamber (who logically were quite surprised to find a group of strangers). In the ensuing combat the playing characters quickly took care of such inconvenient guests thanks to Flynn Blessing his comrades and Belacqua's Magic Projectile, so they quickly discovered both priests were carrying with them another two two-headed lion amulets as well as a bag full of gold coins.

Considering that delving into the chosen tunnel had its consequences the group decided it was better to leave it for later and the characters went out of the chamber to explore the vicinity, reaching a near cave from which arose an indescribable stench... there they found a great heap of bones covered with skin scraps and muscles in advanced state of decomposition. The bones, of men and dwarf alike, surely were from those opposing to the plans of Penumbra followers, who knows if among the corpses were the remains of some of the adventure companions who had died along the way (but this didn't prevent them from search among the remains and discover 2 vials with Heal Serious Injuries potions).

After this dire discovery they continued exploring the nearby caves, facing an orc troop (which were unable to do nothing thanks to the recently acquired levitate ability of Flynn, a Sleep spel by Belacqua and a timely "migraine" that allowed the rest of the group to finish them without too much trouble) and another one of kobolds, which were tricky cheated by Belacqua thanks to the priestly tunic with the bleeding eye of Penumbra she weared and her male aspect (consequence of the sex change due to the magic fortune cards of previous sessions) and then be slaughtered by the half-elf mage casting an Ice Storm spell.
